Welcome to the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus Veterans Legislative Day website. We are hosting an Illinois Veterans Legislative Day on Thursday May 22. Check in starts at 9:30 a.m. in the Howlett Building Hall of Flags, with opening remarks at 11:00am. Lunch will be provided to all Veterans and their guests who RSVP.

Go to the Howlett Building in Springfield Illinois. From I-55 take the Clear Lake Avenue Exit WEst. Turn Left on 2nd Street, until you get to the Howlett Building. Here is a link to a map of the building

House Bill 2044 allows disabled veterans to receive a set of Disabled Veteran license plates free of charge, and receive a second set of plates for $24. House Bill 167 allows a surviving spouse and surviving parents of a person who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces to obtain a set of Gold Star license plates on request. Senate Bill 489 allows the issuance of Support Our Troops license plates for purchase by the public.

In 2007, Illinois lawmakers introduced a number of legislative initiatives to honor veterans living in the State of Illinois. One of the ways many choose to honor Illinois veterans or represent their own service as veterans is by displaying a commemorative license plate.
 
House Bill 1236 PDF Print E-mail
House Bill 1236 puts harsher penalties in place for identity theft of active duty members of the Armed Services or Reserved Forces of the U.S. or Illinois National Guard serving in a foreign country. The current theft of credit, money, goods, services or other property not exceeding $300 of a member of the active duty Armed Services or Reserve Forces of the United States of Illinois, or of the Illinois National Guard serving in a foreign country is a Class 4 felony (1 to 3 years). The new law makes it a Class 3 felony (2 to 5 years). In addition, the identity theft of credit, money, goods services or other property exceeding $300 but not $2,000 in value when the victim is a member of the active duty Armed Services or Reserve Forces of the United States of Illinois, or of the Illinois National Guard serving in a foreign country increased to a Class 2 felony (3 to 7 years). When the value of the property stolen is more than $2,000 but less than $10,000 the person is guilty of a Class 1 felony (4 to 15 years).

House Bill 639 allows state employees who are also veterans up to 4 days of leave per year to visit a veteran’s hospital or clinic for a service-related disability. House Bill 12 requires the City of Chicago and Cook County to follow a state law which requires government employers to pay their employees who are on active duty in the U.S. military their full pay and benefits.

This bill created a program to offer assistance to Reservists and National Guard members who are interested in purchasing a home. The legislation provides assistance up to 15% of the purchase price of the house in the form of a grant. Eligible veterans are required to apply within 3 years following completion of their active duty.
